LIPUTAN6ENGLISH – Citilink Indonesia has confirmed an incident involving one of its passengers smoking on a plane that recently went viral on the internet. The incident was recorded in a video uploaded to the account X (formerly Twitter) @b***a which was accessed on Tuesday (11/21). The video shows several airline crew members approaching a man in black. The man is suspected of smoking on the plane during the flight.

Haza Ibnu Rasyad, Head of Corporate Secretary Division of Citilink Indonesia, has confirmed the incident. He explained that the incident involving the smoking passenger occurred on Saturday (11/18) last time in the Citilink QG 949 flight from Batam to Surabaya.

“During the flight, the cabin crew saw a passenger lighting a cigarette in the plane’s toilet. The cabin crew immediately approached the passenger and gave a warning,” said Haza in his statement.

The airline crew then took the passenger to the waiting room for questioning. The passenger admitted to smoking on the plane.

As a result of his actions, the passenger was given an administrative sanction by Citilink Indonesia. The sanction is a flight ban for 12 months.

In addition to administrative sanctions from the airline, the passenger can also be subject to criminal sanctions. Article 412 of Law No. 1 of 2009 concerning Aviation states that any person who smokes in an aircraft can be sentenced to imprisonment for a maximum of 1 year and/or a fine of up to Rp2.5 billion.

The ban on smoking on airplanes is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of flights. Cigarette smoke can harm the aircraft’s ventilation system and cause the air in the cabin to become unsterile. Nicotine can also affect the aircraft’s systems, over time, forming sticky plaque that can interfere with the function of the circulation system so that it does not run optimally.

Therefore, all passengers are encouraged to comply with the ban on smoking on airplanes. Passengers who are caught smoking on an airplane can be subject to severe penalties, both administrative and criminal.
