LIPUTAN6 EN – Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters rallied outside the United States embassy in Jakarta on Sunday, December 17, 2023, to condemn the US veto of a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The protesters, who began gathering at the embassy at 5:00 a.m. local time, carried Palestinian flags, posters, and banners. They also held a variety of activities, including prayers, recitations of the Quran, and speeches.

“We strongly condemn the US veto of the UN Security Council resolution,” said Mohammad Faisal, spokesman for the Indonesian Council of Islamic Organizations (Majelis Ormas Indonesia), which organized the rally. “This veto clearly shows that the US has no intention of resolving the conflict in Palestine.”

Faisal added that the rally was also a form of moral support for the Palestinian people, who have been victims of Israeli aggression for decades.

“We want to send a message to the Palestinian people that we will never forget them,” he said. “We will continue to fight for their rights.”

The rally was peaceful and concluded at noon local time.

The Palestinian issue remains a concern for Indonesians

The pro-Palestinian rally showed that the Palestinian issue remains a concern for many Indonesians. This is not surprising, as Indonesia has a long history of supporting the Palestinian people. Indonesia has provided aid to the Palestinians in their struggle against Israeli occupation.

The Palestinian issue is also a humanitarian issue. The Palestinian people have suffered greatly as a result of the conflict with Israel.

It is therefore not surprising that Indonesians continue to support the Palestinians. They hope that the conflict in Palestine can be resolved peacefully and that the Palestinian people can live in peace.

The pro-Palestinian rally also served as a call for the Indonesian government to take a tougher stance against Israel. The Indonesian government should provide more concrete support to the Palestinians, both politically and economically.

The Indonesian government should also work with other countries to pressure Israel to end its aggression against the Palestinians.

With a strong stance from the Indonesian government, it is hoped that the conflict in Palestine can be resolved and peace can be achieved in the region.

Positive and negative impacts of the pro-Palestinian rally

The pro-Palestinian rally had a number of positive impacts in Indonesia.

  • It raised awareness of the Palestinian issue among Indonesians.
  • It strengthened solidarity between Indonesians and the Palestinian people.
  • It pushed the Indonesian government to take a tougher stance against Israel.

The rally also had some negative impacts.

  • It strained relations between Indonesia and the United States.
