LIPUTAN6 EN – It may not be necessary to follow a low carbohydrate diet found as previously thought to keep type 1 diabetes under control, according to a new study from Sweden.

According to research conducted by scientists at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, adopting a moderately low-carbohydrate diet can help individuals with type 1 diabetes maintain balanced blood sugar levels.

In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin, which is essential for allowing blood sugar to enter cells for use as energy.

Without insulin, sugar accumulates in the blood, leading to potential serious organ damage.

During this study, researchers selected 25 men and 25 women with type 1 diabetes, asking them to follow a diet with 50 percent of energy coming from carbohydrates, or a moderately low-carbohydrate diet with 30 percent of energy from carbohydrates.

All participants in the study had high blood sugar levels and were receiving insulin doses.

Continuous blood sugar monitoring devices were used to record blood sugar levels every 15 minutes for at least 16 weeks.

Both diet types included healthy levels of carbohydrates rich in fiber, along with vegetables, unsaturated fats, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

Researchers found that blood sugar levels remained within the targeted range for a longer period (an average of 68 minutes per day) for those following a moderately low-carbohydrate diet compared to the traditional high-carbohydrate diet.

At the same time, the duration of blood sugar elevation decreased by 85 minutes per day.

A medical study published in “The Lancet” found that a type of acid called “ketones” remained at reasonable levels, reducing concerns that it could become excessively high when carbohydrates are reduced in type 1 diabetes.

Commenting on the study, lead author and nutrition expert Sofia Sterner Isaksson said, “The study shows that following a moderately low-carbohydrate diet can lower average blood sugar levels, which is considered beneficial in reducing the risk of organ damage in individuals with type 1 diabetes,” as reported by the “Medical Express” medical website.

Isaksson suggested that it is “important for the diet to remain healthy, with a particular focus on the quality of fats and carbohydrates, and not to reduce carbohydrates excessively.”

This research emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, particularly in considering the quality of fats and carbohydrates. Isaksson also emphasizes that the amount of carbohydrates should not be too low.

The study provides new insights into the benefits of a moderately low-carbohydrate diet for individuals with type 1 diabetes.
